Appreciation post: hit 1,000 plays logged on BoardGameGeek and it messed with my head
I logged my 1,000th play on BGG last Tuesday, a quick round of The Crew with my wife at our kitchen table in Dayton. The number itself is whatever, but scrolling back through, I saw games I played once and hated, games I played 40 times in one winter, and a bunch I don't even remember owning. It made me realize my shelf has about 30 games I've never touched, so now I'm doing a no-buy year and working through those first. How many plays are you all at, and did seeing your own number make you rethink anything?
The line about games you played 40 times in one winter hit me. I used to roll my eyes at people logging plays, thought it was just spreadsheet brain and a way to make a fun hobby feel like homework. Then I started tracking mine last year and found out I'd played Codenames 60 times, which I never would have guessed, and also that I bought Spirit Island, punched it, and never actually played it once. Now I'm at 380 plays and the log is less about the number and more about seeing what I avoid. My unplayed pile is 22 games deep, so your no-buy year sounds way smarter than whatever I'm doing.
