I used to think teaching new games was about explaining every rule up front.

A friend in our Seattle group just started playing and said 'Can we just start? I'll figure it out.' After that, I always do a quick five minute teach then jump right in. How do you handle teaching complex games to new people?

Honestly that sounds like a total disaster waiting to happen. Jumping in after five minutes just sets people up to fail and feel lost. The whole point of learning a complex game is understanding how the systems connect, and you can't get that by just starting. It leads to constant stops for rule questions and ruins the flow for everyone. A proper teach respects everyone's time by giving them the tools to actually play.

Wait, you think five minutes is enough?

See it differently from @the_phoenix. For me, getting to the table fast keeps people from zoning out during a long teach. You learn the connections by actually playing a round.
