I used to track my Twilight Imperium games on notebook paper, now I have an app and honestly I miss the paper
Back around 2016 my group played TI3 almost every other Saturday at a buddy's place in Toledo. I kept this beat up spiral notebook where I wrote down who won, what race they played, and one dumb thing that happened that game. Like the time Dave traded me a cease fire and then immediately attacked. I wrote that down. Still have the notebook somewhere.
Now we all use an app that tracks stats and it auto saves everything. Scores, turns, who backstabbed who. It works fine. Takes like 10 seconds. But nobody writes anything down anymore, so the funny stuff just disappears. Last month Craig won as the Emirates and I could not tell you one thing that happened that game. The app says he scored 10 points on turn 7. That is it. That is the whole memory.
I know it sounds dumb to complain about convenience. But there was something about flipping back through pages and seeing the old games, the names we gave fleets, the arguments. It made the games feel like they mattered more.
Anyone still keep a paper log for their campaigns or is it just me being old about it?
My buddy kept a paper log for his TI3 group out in Akron and his wife actually read through the whole thing at their 10 year game anniversary. Half of it was just inside jokes they had all forgotten. He said the app would have saved him the trouble but he would have lost all of that.
