Just realized a trick to stop that one friend from taking 20 minutes on their turn in heavy strategy games.
We were playing Scythe last weekend and it was getting brutal. Every time it got to my buddy Mark, he'd just stare at the board, pick up his pieces, put them down, and sigh. I tried the usual 'come on, man' but nothing. Then I grabbed the sand timer from my copy of Boggle, set it to 2 minutes, and plunked it down in front of him on his next turn. The pressure actually worked. He made a decision in 90 seconds and the whole game pace improved. It felt a bit aggressive, but it saved the night. Has anyone else tried a physical timer for analysis paralysis, or is there a better way to handle it without being the board game police?
