Just realized I've been playing Catan wrong for 3 years
I was reading through the rulebook last night because someone argued about the robber placement and I found out I've been letting people move the robber on the turn they roll a 7 AND steal a card at the same time. Turns out you're supposed to move it first, then the person who rolled gets to steal from someone on that hex. I've been doing it backwards and it completely changes the early game. Wild to think I've played like 50 games with the wrong rule and nobody ever caught it because we all learned from the same bad teacher. Has anyone else discovered a rule they completely misunderstood for way too long?

That thing about "nobody ever caught it because we all learned from the same bad teacher" really hits home. It's funny how we just assume everyone else knows what they're doing, and then suddenly you realize you've been doing something basic wrong for years, like loading the dishwasher the wrong way or putting trash bags in backwards. It's almost like the real rule is just whatever the first person who showed you thought was right, and nobody questions it until something forces you to read the fine print.

Heard a podcast once where someone called it "the gospel of the first person who showed you.
