My friend's insistence on explaining every rule before we play just kills the vibe for new people at our table.

I saw three people zone out completely during a 45 minute preamble to Scythe last Saturday, so now I just teach the core goal and first turn, then we jump in and learn as we go.

Have you considered how a long rules talk might actually waste more time? People learn better by doing, so starting the game gets them invested faster. A bored player who quits halfway through is the real time sink.

A full rules explanation shows respect for everyone's time and investment.

Wait, so @andrew916 thinks a bored player quitting is better than a quick rules talk?
