Visited the Gen Con Board Game Library - are demos better than full playthroughs?

I just got back from Gen Con in Indianapolis last weekend. I spent 3 hours in the board game library trying out new releases. Some people think a 10 minute demo is enough to know if a game is worth buying. Others say you need a full 45 minute playthrough to really get the mechanics. I saw a group fight over a game after a quick demo then change their minds during a longer session. Which side do you lean on for deciding if a game is good?

I saw a podcast breakdown where the host argued a quick demo shows you the theme and basic flow, but the real strategy doesn't click until a full playthrough. Maybe it's just me but I need both to really decide.

Totally get that. Read an article the other day that said demos are just a sales pitch, not the real game. They show you the shiny bits but hide the boring parts. Full playthroughs reveal the pacing issues and repetitive mechanics. That's where you learn if the strategy holds up for hours. So you're right, you really do need both. The demo hooks you, the playthrough shows the flaws.
