When our CEO joined the weekly online board game meetup, everything changed.
Last month, I convinced my remote team to start a weekly virtual board game session on an online platform. Our CEO decided to drop in last week, and suddenly the casual banter turned into a high-stakes strategy discussion with everyone on their best behavior. Do you find that workplace hierarchies spill over into your gaming sessions too?

Back in 2020, our casual Friday game night had a regular attendee from the C-suite. I always assumed games would level the playing field, but seeing how quickly the tone shifted when he logged on changed my perspective. Suddenly, every move in Settlers of Catan was dissected for corporate parallels, and jokes were stifled. The freedom to make risky plays vanished, replaced by calculated decisions meant to showcase strategic thinking. It felt less like escapism and more like an extension of the weekly review. Now I see that titles don't get checked at the login screen.

Ever notice when the underlings start winning, the hierarchy reasserts itself?

At our office trivia night last month, the team lead would "suggest" answers in a way that felt like orders. It's just like parkerkim said about Catan, where fun gets wrecked by someone needing to be in charge. The second our group scored well, he jumped in to micromanage every guess. Those power moves just follow people everywhere, I guess.
