3 years I swore by flux core for field repairs, last week a retired inspector showed me a better way

You know, that really hits home. I had the same experience a few years back. @troy439 you're right that flux core handles dirty steel like a champ, but I totally get what you mean about a game changing setup. A buddy of mine showed me this old school technique using dual shield wire with a little extra gas flow, and it cleaned up my welds on rusty pipe like nothing else. I felt like I had been missing something obvious for years. It's humbling when someone with more experience shows you a simpler way to do things, isn't it?

Flux core still has its place though, I've had way better luck with it on dirty rusty steel than anything else I've tried. Maybe the guy had a different setup or was working with cleaner material than what I usually see.
