A foreman told me my weld prep was sloppy and it stuck with me

Last year on a job in Baton Rouge, a foreman named Dave looked at my bevels and said they looked like a dog chewed them. I was pretty defensive at first, but he showed me how he uses a template gauge to check angles every time. Now I spend an extra 5 minutes on each piece before striking an arc, and my weld quality is way more consistent. Anyone else have a boss who called them out in a way that actually helped?

35 bucks for a set of quality weld gauges (the ones with the little magnifying glass built in) saved my ass after a similar talk. I keep one clipped to my hood strap now, right next to my chipping hammer. Dave was right, checking your bevels before you lay a bead is like checking your gas before you leave for a road trip, it saves you from a headache later.

Depends on the weld, sometimes you just gotta run it hot and trust your eye.
