Been welding a 2-inch gap wrong for three years straight
On a job in Cleveland last month, the foreman watched me run a bead on a boiler tube. He just said, 'Your heat is way too high, kid. You're baking the metal.' I was running at 145 amps on 1/4 inch plate. Always did. He dropped it to 115 and the penetration was perfect, no undercut. Felt like an idiot. How many other little habits are we all carrying that are just plain wrong?

Baking the metal" sounds dramatic. You still got the job done for three years, right?

That oven was set to 450 degrees for eight hours straight.
