Can we talk about that time a client brought us homemade cookies during a shutdown?

We were in the middle of a tight boiler repair schedule, and the plant manager's wife showed up with a tray of cookies. It was a nice gesture, but we all had grease on our hands and full face shields on. I mean, we had to awkwardly nod thanks through the visors, and she just stood there waiting. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like folks don't realize how in-the-zone we get on those jobs.

Totally get that, I've had folks try to hand me coffee while I'm backing a 53-footer into a tight dock. You just can't switch focus that fast.

Actually my dad was a dock foreman for thirty years and he always said the best drivers could take a coffee and keep backing smooth. It's about training your brain to handle split focus like any other skill. If you practice the maneuver enough, accepting a cup shouldn't throw off your whole groove. Sounds like it's less about the coffee and more about not being fully comfortable with the backup routine yet.

Try handing them the gear shift next time and see how they do.
