Caught myself using the wrong filler rod on stainless for 3 years

I was welding a stainless tank at a job site in Houston last week when the lead man walked over and asked why my beads looked so rough. He pointed out I was using 308L rod on 316L metal, which I didn't even know was a problem. I always just grabbed whatever rod was laying around without checking the numbers. Now I double check every time and my welds look way cleaner. Anyone else learn a basic rod rule way later than they should have?

Not gonna lie, I kind of see it the other way. I've been running 308L on 316 for years with no real issues, just gotta make sure your heat input is dialed in and you're not letting it cool too fast. The real problem is probably more about technique than the rod itself, most guys I know say it's fine for non code work. If you're doing food grade or chemical stuff they'll spec the right rod, but for general fab it's a pretty common shortcut.

Had a buddy who used to run 309 on everything. Stainless, mild steel, didn't matter. Just kept a box of it in his truck and figured close enough was good enough. One day his boss walks over while he's welding a critical support bracket on a food processing line and asks what rod he's using. He says 309 and the boss just stares at him for a solid ten seconds. Turns out they had a spec sheet for that exact job that called for 316L with a full cert trace. He got sent home early and they made him redo every weld he'd done that week with a boroscope check. Last I heard he was back to using whatever he found in the shop but kept a closer eye on who was watching.

Wait, so you're telling me there's a free pass to use the wrong rod for three years and it's actually fine? I guess I've been losing sleep over nothing worrying about the numbers on those little boxes. Next thing you know, someone will tell me you can weld aluminum with a coat hanger if the heat is right. But seriously, it makes me wonder how many shortcuts are just floating around out there that nobody bothers to mention until you look like a goof in front of your lead. At least now I can tell my boss I'm not wrong, I'm just "technique focused" while using the wrong rod.
