I finally caught a guy using a crescent wrench as a hammer on a flanges job

We were tightening bolts on a heat exchanger at the Marathon refinery in Gary and this new kid pulls out a 12-inch crescent wrench to tap a gasket into place. I had to stop him before he rounded off the whole flange face. Anyone else run into guys using the wrong tool just because it's close enough?

That "screwdriver as a chisel" thing reminds me of my buddy Dave. He watched a guy try to pry open a flange with a butter knife on a steam line once. Took him ten minutes and the knife snapped in half.

That crescent wrench trick is bad enough but I've seen guys use a pipe wrench on stainless steel bolts thinking it's the same thing. The teeth just chew up the metal and then you got galling issues you can't fix without a die grinder. I had a foreman once who swore by using a screwdriver as a chisel on flanges and I wanted to tell him to just buy a real chisel but he was old school and set in his ways.
