I used to weld every crack the same way, but not anymore

For years I would just grind out any crack and weld it back up with 7018 rod, no questions asked. Then about three years ago on a job at a paper mill in Savannah, a foreman told me I was wasting time and weakening the metal. He showed me how to drill stop holes at the ends first and use a bevel technique. Has anyone else had an old timer change the way you approach a repair?

Saw my buddy swear by that stop hole trick after a foreman showed him on a bridge job once.

Wait, @kai_west you're telling me some guys still weld cracks without drilling those stop holes first?
