Just realized I've been wasting time on my grinder prep for years

Last week I was on a job in Gary, Indiana, working on a big pressure vessel repair. My foreman watched me spend 20 minutes dressing a grinding wheel and finally just walked over and showed me his method. He just gives it a quick tap with a hammer instead of messing with a dresser tool for 10 minutes. I felt pretty stupid honestly but it worked way better and saved me a ton of time. The wheel cut cleaner and I didn't have to stop every few passes to fix it. Ngl I've been doing it the slow way since I started in the trade back in 2017. Has anyone else found a quick trick that made you rethink how you do basic stuff?

Tap it with a hammer but don't smack it too hard or you'll crack the wheel and make a mess.

Yeah my grandpa used to say the same thing about the old cast iron pans in his workshop, you give em a light tap and they just ring like a bell. But my cousin got a little too excited with a sledgehammer once and sent a chunk of cast iron flying across the room, nearly took out the dog. So yeah, gentle taps are the way to go, nobody wants a cracked mess to clean up.
