Old guy told me to stop using soap on my welding helmet lens

At a job site in Tulsa last spring, this 60-year veteran grabbed my helmet and said 'You're ruining that lens with Windex.' He just uses a dry microfiber cloth and a little spit for spatter... I thought he was nuts, but my new lens has lasted 4 months without hazing. Any of you old-timers still do it this way?

Yeah, that old timer knew his stuff.

Hang on @emmafisher, I gotta push back a little. That old timer was sharp on a lot of things, sure, but he also swore up and down that oak trees cause foundation cracks, which is just not true. The roots don't go that deep unless you're right on top of the house. He also used to say you should prune in the middle of summer to "let the tree breathe," but that's when you're stressing them out the most, not helping them. Loved the guy, but he had some real head-scratchers too.

Wait, wait. He said prune in the middle of summer? That's insane, you'd cook the tree from the inside out.

I get what you're saying about pruning in summer, but I've got a different take on it. If you're just cleaning out dead or damaged branches that are already sapping the tree's energy, summer can actually be the right time to do it so the tree can seal those cuts fast. The old timer might've been talking about light summer pruning for specific trees or situations, not just hacking away at everything in July.
