Old timer's anti-seize warning that actually saved my ass
Back in 2018 on a shutdown at the Marathon refinery in Gary, this old journeyman named Lou saw me loading up studs with copper anti-seize and just shook his head. He said "you're gonna be the reason we gotta torch these out next outage" and I figured he was just being dramatic. Turns out on high-temp applications around the furnaces, that stuff bakes into a hard crust that makes the nuts nearly impossible to break loose later. I fought him on it because every shop I'd been at swore by the stuff, but after seeing the torque specs just shred the threads on a retorque, I get what he meant. He had me run the studs dry and use a light oil on the nut faces only, and everything came apart clean when we buttoned up. Has anyone else run into a similar situation where the standard trick made things worse in a specific setting?

That bit about it baking into a hard crust is exactly what happened to me on a feed water heater job, I thought the guys were being lazy when they steered me away from the copper stuff. We ran everything dry with a smear of moly on the threads only and a dab of oil under the washer, and that was the first shutdown where I didn't cuss out a seized nut. Lou sounds like he knew his stuff, sometimes the old way is just the right way for the hot spots.
