Pro tip: never park a rig under a water tower on site
I was working a job up in Gary last summer at the old steel plant. Some new guy parked his welding truck right under a leaking water tower valve. We all heard this slow drip for like two hours but nobody paid attention until a chunk of rust fell off and punched a hole through his truck roof. Total write off on the cab. Now I walk the whole site before I park anywhere. I check for bird nests too since a heavy one dropped a wrench on my hood last year. Has anyone else had something stupid fall from above and wreck your gear?

Last summer, I was on a job in Gary too and saw a guy lose a brand new compressor because a piece of that water tower fell right on it. A bird's nest on a crane arm dropped a bolt on my truck bed last spring, so now I check every overhead spot before I park anywhere. It's a good rule to walk the whole site first because you never know what's waiting up there to drop.

Respectfully, @jade_lane19, I've been in the trade over thirty years and I see it a little different. Walking a site first is good practice, but you can't catch everything from the ground, and a lot of those old structures have hidden rot that's impossible to spot without a close look. Better to focus on assuming anything could fall from anywhere and always keep your gear a safe distance, rather than trying to predict every single danger spot.
