Rant: A welder in Mobile showed me a trick for lining up flanges

We were fitting up a big steam drum and I was struggling with the bolt holes. He just grabbed a piece of chalk, marked the high spot on the gasket, and said 'start here, it'll walk right on'. I've used that trick on every flange since. What's your go-to trick for stubborn flanges?

My uncle always swore by a little candle wax on the threads.

Honestly, what kind of threads was he putting it on? Like for plumbing or sewing?
