Spent $300 on a fancy welding hood, still reach for my old $80 one

I picked up that auto-darkening mask with the big viewing window in Tulsa, figured the extra clarity would save my neck on long overhead welds, but it sits in the truck while my beat-up standard hood does the job every time. The cheap one has a fixed shade that never glitches, while the expensive one flicks dark at random when the sun hits the sensor, and that's burned me on two repair jobs already. Anyone else drop serious cash on gear that just collects dust, or am I the only one who trusts the simple stuff over the pricey upgrade?

My uncle does the same thing with fishing rods, bought a $400 graphite setup and still grabs his old fiberglass pole from the 80s every trip. It's like the more buttons and settings something has, the more ways it can mess up on you. I see it with my buddy's truck too, he got the fancy GPS dash unit but still uses his phone for directions because the built-in one lags. Simple stuff just works, no surprises, no random glitches at the worst moment. The expensive gear is nice in theory but real life doesn't care about the specs on paper.
