Took a union hall job over a private outfit, still second-guessing it

Back in March I had two offers on the table for the same week. One was a shutdown job through the union hall in Gary, Indiana, and the other was a private boiler repair outfit paying $4 more an hour. I picked the union job because of the benefits and the chance to work with a crew I knew. The work was steady and the guys were solid, but the per diem was a joke compared to what the private outfit was offering. Has anyone else taken the lower hourly rate for the long-term security, and did it actually pay off down the road?
