Tried a different rod angle on a cracked drum and it changed my whole approach
Been doing this 12 years now, mostly power plant and pressure vessel work. Last month we had a cracked steam drum at a plant outside St. Louis, standard stuff. But I decided to try running my rod at a steeper angle than usual, around 70 degrees instead of the normal 45. The puddle behaved totally different, less undercut and the slag peeled off cleaner than I've ever seen. My foreman walked over and just stared for a second before saying 'huh, never seen it lay in that nice.' Makes me wonder how many little tweaks like that I've missed over the years. Anyone else ever change one small thing and get way different results?

I used to be one of those guys who swore by 45 degrees for everything, thought anything else was just messing with the puddle for no reason. But last fall on a big boiler tube repair I accidentally bumped my stinger and held it at a weirder angle for a few passes, and the weld just laid in perfect. It made me realize I'd been boxing myself in with the same technique for years, treating it like gospel when it's really just a starting point. Now I experiment on every job, just small things like rod angle or a slightly different travel speed, and it's wild how often you find something that works better. That cracked drum story hits home because it’s exactly the kind of small tweak that changes everything.

Hold up, you accidentally bumped your stinger and it laid in perfect? That's wild. I'd probably just cuss myself out and move on, not stop to think it might be a better angle.
