Tried a new preheat method on a 4-inch thick plate in Spokane and got some serious warping

We used a ring of rosebuds around the center instead of our usual slow oven, and it pulled the whole piece out of true. Anyone have a better method for thick sections that won't break the bank?

That rosebud ring method sounds like a recipe for disaster. Thick plate is a nightmare to keep flat.

Yeah, the ring method is overkill for thick plate. Just use a couple of big torches and walk the heat in a slow, even line. It's boring but it beats fighting a warped mess later.

My last attempt at a fancy preheat on heavy plate ended with a piece that looked like a potato chip. I learned the hard way that uneven heat is the enemy. Now I just use a big, slow oven and cross my fingers. It's boring, but it keeps things flat without any surprise twists. Sometimes the simple way is the only way that works.
