Tried a P80 pipe beveler versus a standard angle grinder for a big job at a refinery near Baton Rouge

We had to bevel 200 feet of 6-inch pipe for a turnaround last month. The crew I was on used the P80, and the other gang stuck with their grinders and templates. The P80 cut our time down from about 12 minutes per joint to under 4, and we had way less rework on the fit-up. Has anyone else seen a big difference switching to a machine for beveling?

Hang on, I gotta push back a little here. I've run P80s on big jobs and they're great for production but they're not magic. We had a 1500 foot superheater header job in East Texas where the P80 was actually slower because the pipe had heavy mill scale and the beveler kept gumming up and skipping. Plus you gotta have perfect alignment or the bevel comes out a little off on the inside diameter. The grinder guys with a good template and a steady hand were actually finishing cleaner bevels in about the same time once you factor in setup and cleaning the machine.
