Warning: My new apprentice tried to use a pipe wrench on a boiler gauge last week

We were on a job in Toledo and he thought the pressure reading was stuck, so he gave it a good crank and the whole glass face popped out like a cork. I spent the next hour calming down the site manager and explaining we needed a whole new assembly. Has anyone else had a helper do something that made you just shake your head?

That reminds me of a guy who tried to free a seized valve with a sledgehammer. He succeeded, mostly in sending the valve stem through a drywall ceiling two floors up. The look on his face was almost worth the repair bill.

Read a story once where a guy did that and the valve shot out like a rocket, @angela_dixon. Some lessons are learned the hard way.

Ha, that's wild! I remember my uncle had a similar thing happen with an old truck he was fixing. He was trying to loosen a rusted brake line and used a pipe wrench with a cheater bar. Next thing we know, the whole bleeder valve snapped off and flew right past his ear, hit the garage door, and left a dent. He just stood there staring at it for a solid minute. @angela_dixon, I bet that guy with the sledgehammer had the same "what did I just do" look after the valve stem was gone. Sometimes you just gotta laugh so you don't cry, you know?
