Found out the hard way why pressing boards need to be grain-matched

I was flattening a stack of horror paperbacks in my garage last month and grabbed whatever plywood was around. Big mistake. The grain direction on one board was crosswise to the covers and it left this weird texture impression on like 6 books. Took me a while to figure out what happened because the board felt smooth to my hand. Talked to a guy at the local print shop in Dayton who does restoration and he said it's all about the wood fibers lining up with the book grain. Now I label my pressing boards with an arrow so I never mix it up again. Has anyone else seen this happen or am I just the unlucky one?
