Hot take: is a spine that's too stiff a compliment or a flaw?

A retired bookbinder at the Dayton print fair last month ran her thumb down a tight-backed book I'd just finished and asked if I wanted it to open or just sit there looking proud, and now I can't stop wondering whether a stiff spine is good craft or bad design.
