I just finished my 500th book and it was a 3-inch thick monster of a repair job.
The client brought in a water-damaged 1890s encyclopedia set, and after six months of work, the final volume's spine gave me so much trouble I almost gave up and glued the pages to a brick.

Man, that sounds like a true test of patience. Read about a book restorer who said old leather bindings can just decide to die on you, especially after water damage. Totally get what @linda_perry14 means by nightmare, because it stops being a craft and feels like a fight. There’s probably a special kind of dread when the last piece of a huge job fights back that hard. Bet it felt amazing to finally close that cover for good.
