My first Coptic stitch fell apart because I used too much wax on the thread

I was binding a sketchbook for a friend and the whole spine unraveled after about 15 minutes of use. Turns out I over-waxed the linen thread, so the knots wouldn't grip each other, and I had to redo it with just a light pass. Has anyone else had wax cause more problems than it solved?
