My instructor at the 2022 Guild workshop told me to always pre-punch my sewing holes. Tried skipping it on a personal project and the signatures are a mess.

Wait, you went to a Guild workshop and they had to tell you that? I'm honestly surprised it wasn't the first thing they covered. That pre-punching step is like the one rule you never break. The paper just folds and moves in a totally wild way if you try to sew through unpunched signatures, it's a guaranteed mess every single time.

Read it in a book once, still messed it up.

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I tried skipping pre-punching once on a journal I was making for a friend and the whole thing looked like a war zone. The thread kept bunching up and I ended up with these weird puckers where the paper folded weird. Had to redo the entire section three times before I gave up and pre-punched. Now I just do it even if I'm in a rush, learned that lesson the hard way. It's like the one step you can't cut corners on or the whole project goes sideways.
