My old backing press finally gave out last week after 15 years

Honestly, the wooden screw just sheared right off while I was working on a thick leather cover for a journal. Tbh, I had to finish the job with a bunch of clamps and a lot of swearing. What's a good modern replacement that won't break the bank?

Doubt you need something that can crush a car though.

Wait, a backing press? Do you mean a book press? I've only ever heard a bookbinding press called that. For a modern one, the cheap cast iron ones from craft stores are okay for light work, but they'll flex on thick leather. I saved up for a used finishing press from a bindery closing sale. It's solid cast iron and feels like it could crush a car.

Crush a car" is what sold me on getting a real one.
