Old school vs. new: I used to glue spines with PVA only, now I use a mix with wheat paste

For about 5 years I was strictly PVA glue for all my book spines, thinking it was strong enough and fast drying. Then I tried adding wheat paste to the mix last month on a rebind job and the flexibility was way better for the old paper. Anyone else made the switch and noticed a difference in how the spine lasts over time?

Pure wheat paste blend changed everything for me. Old paper just moves better with it.

Wait, Pure wheat paste? Like you MADE it yourself from scratch? I did not even know people still did that with old paper, thought everyone just used the store bought stuff by now. You have to walk me through how you mix it because I am genuinely stunned.
