Switched from wheat paste to PVA glue for book cloth...

For years I used wheat paste for attaching book cloth to boards, but it always left little lumps no matter how much I smoothed it. Last month I tried PVA glue instead and got a perfectly flat finish on my first try. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a difference?

Three years using wheat paste here. PVA dries way too fast for me, I need the working time.
