Warning: A binder I respect told me my endpapers were too tight
I brought a custom journal to a local book arts show last month and a guy who has been binding for 40 years pulled me aside. He said my endpapers were glued too close to the spine and that book would crack open after 50 flips. I had been doing it the same way for 3 years. Took me about 6 test runs to figure out the right 1/8 inch gap. Has anyone else gotten a specific correction that saved them from a bad habit?

Honestly, that "AFTER making 30 journals" part hit hard. That's the thing with bad habits in binding - you can crank out a ton of work before someone actually tells you it's wrong. I had the same blind spot with my glue creep for almost two years before a binder at a workshop pointed out I was using way too much PVA near the hinge. It's wild how fixing one small thing changes the whole feel of the book when you open it.
