Got told my favorite philodendron was 'basic' last week at a plant swap
I was at the community garden swap in Portland last Saturday, trading cuttings. This younger guy looked at my golden pothos vine and said it was too common, that real botany lovers focus on rare imports from Ecuador now. I just laughed and told him I've had that same cutting since 2021, when my grandmother passed and left me her plant collection. It has rooted through three different pots and survived a spider mite outbreak that killed my fancy calathea. In my experience, a plant that thrives in your home conditions matters way more than bragging rights about being rare. Does anyone else get tired of the gatekeeping over what counts as a 'real' plant?

Yeah, just prop what works for you. I've had the same golden pothos for five years and it's done better than any fancy cutting I ever traded for.

Golden pothos are seriously underrated. People go nuts for variegated monsteras or rare philodendrons, but my plain golden pothos has survived me forgetting to water it for two months straight and still put out new growth. It just chills in a corner with low light and keeps going. The fancy cuttings I've tried always end up getting root rot or just dying for no reason. Something about that basic plant just works, no special treatment needed.
