Had to pick between a fake snake and a reflective pinwheel for keeping birds off my seedlings

I was trying to protect my new tomato and pepper starts from the local sparrows. The fake snake looked realistic but my neighbor's cat kept stealing it. The reflective pinwheel was only $4 at the garden center down the road. I went with the pinwheel. After 3 days the birds were back pecking at the soil. Guess I need a second idea. Anyone else find a cheap trick that actually works for seedling protection?

Read somewhere that flashing like from old CDs hung on string actually works better than the pinwheel since the light shifts with the wind. Could try that before shelling out for netting.

Absolutely, that CD trick is pure genius. I did the same thing last year and the light really dances around, kept the birds guessing all season. Ended up not needing a single net.
