I finally compared my mom's 1995 garden photos to mine from last month, and the soil is totally different now
My mom kept a photo album of her garden in 1995 when we lived outside Omaha. Last month I laid my own photos next to hers and the difference in the soil color alone was obvious. Hers was dark and crumbly, mine looks gray and packed down. I pulled 6 jars of soil from both yards and sent them in, and my organic matter came back at 1.8 percent while hers tested closer to 5. The lab tech told me decades of bagged fertilizer and tilling broke down the structure. Turns out her beds were built on 20 years of leaves and kitchen scraps, not products. So for the people who have been gardening for a while, did your soil get worse over time too, and what did you do to bring it back?
