I finally killed my fiddle leaf fig and honestly feel relieved

Had it for 4 years in my Denver apartment. It dropped leaves every winter no matter what. Last week I moved it to water it and the whole root ball was mush. I think I overwatered it the whole time. My mom gave it to me and I felt guilty tossing it but honestly the empty corner looks better. Anyone else feel freed after a plant finally dies?

The whole root ball being mush hit home for me. I did the same thing with a monstera my sister gave me, kept watering it on a schedule instead of checking the soil, and it just rotted from the inside out. When I finally threw it away I felt bad for like an hour, then I put a cheap snake plant in that corner and it's been thriving on pure neglect for two years now. Sometimes the guilt is just about the person who gave it to you, but the plant itself was already gone. You did the right thing.
