My 20 year old field guide beats the ID app on my phone every time

I got this beat up Peterson guide at a garage sale back in 2003 for 50 cents, and honestly it still wins over PlantSnap or whatever I try. Last month I was hiking around the Skagit River area and found this odd fern, ran it through three different apps and got three different answers. The book had a clear sketch and a note about the spore pattern on the underside, matched it in like two minutes. I think the apps are too focused on leaf shape alone, they miss the tiny stuff. Anyone else find that the old paper guides are just better at getting you to actually slow down and look at the whole plant?
