My phalaenopsis finally bloomed after I stopped fussing with it

I was repotting my orchid every 4 months and giving it fertilizer every week, but it just sat there with sad leaves for close to a year. Then I left for a 10 day trip in Austin and forgot to set up my usual watering schedule, so it got totally dry for a while. Now it's got 3 new buds on the spike, has anyone else had success from basically ignoring their orchids?
