The purple coneflower I nearly pulled out as a weed
Ten years ago I bought a house and the previous owner had this scraggly plant by the fence. I figured it was some kind of thistle and almost yanked it out. My neighbor, this older guy named Ed, stopped me and said "leave it alone, it'll surprise you." Sure enough by July it was covered in big purple blooms and bees were all over it. Now I plant them everywhere, but I still think about how close I came to killing that first one.

That neighbor Ed sounds like a real gem. I bet he's the kind of guy who knows every plant in his yard by name and probably has stories about them too. The thing nobody's mentioning is how much we rely on people like Ed to teach us about the world around us. Without him you would have pulled up a plant that ended up being one of your favorites. I wonder how many other good things we miss out on just because nobody tells us to wait and see what happens. Makes me want to go find an Ed in my own neighborhood and ask him about the scraggly stuff in my garden.
