Watched a guy at the Denver Botanic Gardens pinch off every spent bloom on his zinnias, tried it on mine and got 3x the flowers
Spent 20 minutes talking to him near the cutting garden on a Saturday in July, and now I deadhead everything twice a week and my beds have been going nonstop since, so what other little pruning tricks am I missing that actually pay off like that?
Twenty minutes standing there in July heat listening to a total stranger go on about zinnias? That is some serious dedication right there. Wild part is it clearly worked, tripling your blooms just from pinching off dead ones. I always figured deadheading was one of those things people say you should do but it never seems to matter much, guess I was wrong. What gets me is he was doing it at the botanic gardens, like is that even allowed or does everybody just look the other way while he grooms the place?
