Hot take: a $12 trowel beat my $40 trowel on a 3-course arch in Billings

Spent most of last Saturday cutting an arch on a garage in Billings and grabbed my cheap 12 dollar trowel out of the bucket by habit. It spread mortar way smoother than the 40 dollar one I bought last year, the cheap blade just has a nicer curve on the edges. The expensive one kept digging in at the corners and I ended up fighting it on every joint. Been laying 14 years and I guess I never tested them side by side on the same wall. What trowel do you all keep reaching for, and did the price ever match how it actually handles?
