I used to always butter my bricks and now I don't
Old school guys taught me to butter every brick face. Switched to a thin bed of mud with a smaller notch trowel about 3 years ago after a job in Cleveland. Way less cleanup and I get a better bond line. Anybody else ditch the old way?

Man I don't know, it's just bricks and mortar at the end of the day. I mean, is the bond line really that different if you butter every brick versus just slapping on a thin bed? I've seen guys do it both ways for years and honestly can't tell the difference once the wall's up and cured. Maybe it's just me but I think people overthink this stuff way too much. Long as it's not falling down and the joints are tight, who really cares how you got there?

Does that mean you never pay attention to how the mud grabs the brick when you're laying it, or do you just figure it all settles out in the end? I'm curious if you've ever actually tested the pull strength side by side or if it's more of a gut feeling.
