Old timer told me my mortar was too wet and he was spot on
I always mixed it looser thinking it was easier to spread, but after he showed me a drier mix holds its line way better I switched. Anyone else get called out by a grizzled veteran and had to change your whole approach?

Learned that lesson the hard way too, now I go stiff and use a tamper.
