The great brick line debate: string versus laser

Last week on a garden wall job, my partner insisted on using our old chalk line, while I set up my new laser level. After three courses, his line sagged in the middle from the humidity, and we had a noticeable dip. The laser kept everything dead straight, and we saved at least an hour not having to snap a new line every course. Anyone else make the switch and never look back?

Switched to lasers years ago, never touched a chalk line again.

Totally get where sam_anderson is coming from, lasers are a game changer for sure. I mean, I still keep a chalk box in the truck for rough layouts on really bright days, the red beam just vanishes sometimes. It's just nice to have a backup that doesn't need batteries, you know?

Been there with the sagging line, it's the worst. Lasers are just so much more reliable for keeping things straight. That hour you saved is time you'll never get back.
