Tried colored mortar on a backyard wall and it's getting attention

I've noticed a rise in homes around here using colored mortar for accent pieces. I finally tried it myself on a small wall, and the owner loved the result. Are you seeing this style become more common in your work?

Honestly, I'm not seeing it catch on much here. Most clients still want the clean, classic look of gray mortar. I did a colored mortar job last year, a dark charcoal on a brick patio, and the homeowner ended up asking us to redo it a month later. They said it made the space feel too busy and dated fast. Maybe it's just our local taste, but it feels more like a short lived trend than a new standard.

Colored mortar's popular now. Always test a small patch first.

Testing a small patch first is such good advice, and it works for so much more than just mortar. I see this all the time where people go all in on a new thing without trying it out small first. Like with paint colors or even new apps on your phone, you can save a lot of hassle by testing a bit. It's about handling risk, you know (and we all take risks), not going all the way until you know it works for you. So with colored mortar, that test patch could show if the color looks right in your light, which changes a lot. We should all take that approach more often, it just makes sense.
