Tried to save time by using a level as a straightedge for a cut and ended up with a chipped level and a crooked brick

Doing a retaining wall at a backyard in Denver last Wednesday, figured I'd just run my circular saw along my 4-foot level to notch a brick for a drain pipe, and now my level has a gash in it and the brick looks like a dog chewed it - anyone else learn the hard way that you don't use tools as tools they weren't made for?

Did you not have a brick chisel or even a cheap cold chisel handy? Levels are for leveling, that's rough on any tool.

Did you really use a level as a hammer? I once did that and felt SO dumb.
