Used to eyeball my mortar mix for a decade, then a guy in Boise asked me to write down the exact ratio.
I had to actually measure it out for the first time, and my usual 'looks about right' was off by almost a full shovel of sand. Now I keep a bucket marked for each part, which feels silly but the joints are way more consistent. Anyone else get forced into being precise by a picky client?

That picky client basically gave you a free masterclass in consistency (and saved you future headaches).

Free masterclass in consistency" is such a good way to put it. It reminds me of this one time I had a teacher who would mark you down if your pencil lines weren't dark enough on diagrams. Seemed nuts then, but I get it now.

Ha, right? I had a client once make me redo a whole section of patio because the joints varied by a quarter inch. Felt like overkill but man, it looked way sharper the second time.
